Community Development

bc-2004-building-community_development02.jpgIn 1870, Benedict College was established, in the words of the charter, as a "power of good in society." In 1999, the Division of Community Development (DCD) evolved from that founding philosophy. The primary focus remains African Americans of severely limited economic and social conditions.

The Division of Community Development examines issues affecting children and families, business and economic development, community technology, democracy and government, and educational excellence through teaching, research and public service.  The Division also strives to produce new or strengthened institutions, organizations, relationships, and new standards and expectations for life in the community.  By partnering with communities, the Division of Community Development provides state-of-knowledge programs and services to assist in the design and promotion of public policies that impact African Americans.

The Division of Community Development embraces five areas: Business and Economic Development, Children and Families, Community Technology, Educational Excellence, and Government and Democracy.  Units within the division are:

  • Benedict-Allen Community Development Corporation: a unit that builds affordable housing and provides related services; it also operates a business loan fund.
  • Business Development Center: Provides technical assistance to small businesses and operates an incubator program for businesses.
  • Child Development Center: A national accredited child development program that can accommodate 100 children.
  • Center for Excellence in Education and Equity of African American Students (CEEEAAS): A Center of Excellence that serves as a clearinghouse for information and consultation on culturally sensitive pedagogy for educating minority students.
  • Upward Bound: An afternoon and summer enrichment program to help low income youth transition to college by focusing on academic achievement.
  • Summer Programs: Enrichment, education, and recreation programs for youth offered at Benedict College.
  • Grant Development and Evaluation: The unit that focuses on sponsored programs for research, projects, and evaluation.
  • Broadband in Cities & Towns: An annual conference held on campus that brings together national thought leaders to discuss broadband, education, and community development.

The Division of Community Development publishes a quarterly newsletter edited by Dr. Marianna White Davis. The purpose of the Newsletter is to keep the Benedict College Family and the wider community abreast of the accomplishments and programs being condcuted by the Division.
